Ellicott City Advances in Flood Mitigation – Report

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. – Flood waters high enough to carry away cars and wipe out businesses wrecked Ellicott City on two separate occasions, but officials have a plan to mitigate flood risk.

In July, 2016, six inches of rain fell in two hours, sending floodwaters racing down Main Street of historic Ellicott City, claiming two lives, and two years later, a similar flash flood left a National Guardsman dead who had been trying to rescue others.

But Howard County is working on retention ponds and other means to divert the water.
